The book is neither the written version of an introductory course nor a handbook summarising the whole academic subject. Instead, it wants to bridge the gap from school to university by giving students all the information necessary for finding their way when taking up a course of studies in English language and literature. Besides practical advice on which books to buy, which texts to read, how to find secondary literature and other such elementary study techniques, an appendix provides study aids for acquiring a first overview of English (and American) literary history.
